The weather in Ireland is not as bad as Hollywood would have you believe. Of course we get rain, but the main characteristics of the irish climate is that it is mild, moist and changeable. Because of the warm Gulf stream arriving at our shores, and because Ireland is an island and the sea moderates our temperatures - we never get too hot and never get too cold. In fact, in the south west of Ireland there are areas which never see a frost.
Of course, it is colder and wetter in winter and the days are shorter, but on a clear, crisp day - there is nowhere more beatufiul (not even Ireland in the summer).
Plus:
- The pubs are still open, the Guinness still tastes great and hot whiskeys, hot ports and Irish coffee's are ten times better in winter.
- The History is still fascinating, the ring forts, stone circles and ancient tombs become even more mystical in the wintery weather.
- We can still go walking, horse-riding, surfing and sea-kayaking. In fact there is nothing better than a bracing walk in the winter air followed by lunch in the pub in front of the fire. (maybe with a hot port)
- The light can be amazing. If you are photographer, amateur or professional, the low winter light conditions can produce startling results as the sun casts long shadows over the land. All the images on this pages were taken between the months of November and March.
- Ireland is less crowded. Although Vagabond specialises in the off-the-beaten-track tours of Ireland, sometimes even we cannot avoid the crowds in summer. In winter we have the country to ourselves and you will go home feeling that you have had a much more personal experience with Ireland and its people.
- Its cheaper. Getting here is cheaper. Staying in Dublin is cheaper and our tours are cheaper. Its a great value time to come to Ireland.
- There is loads going on all round Ireland, all year. There are festivals all over the country from the Galway Music festival in February to St. Patrick's day celebrations to small events all over the country. It is also a great time for come for sporting events, from the homegrown skills of the Gaelic Games to the International Rugby every spring. Not to mention concerts. And of course the shops are open all year round.
- Vagabond is running all year round. While other tour operators hibernate for the winter, we like to keep active and showing people around Ireland.
